Ahead of the upcoming football season, Victory Sports Club confirmed the signing of experienced duo, Akram Abdul Ghani (Aku) - National Football Team Captain and Mohamed Umair - Former Victory SC captain.
Along with two stars, Aku and Umair, rising coach Sobah Mohamed Ibrahim (Soba) signed a contract with Victory SC, to lead them in this year’s FAM Second Division Football Tournament.
Both Aku and Umair, who were regulars in the top tier of Maldives Football for past 17 years, signed a 10-month contract with Victory. Former Victory defender Soba, signed a 6-month contract, with an option to add further, a definitive period.
Umair started his career from Victory SC in 2006, he is one of the youngest Captain of Victory and played for them from 2006-2009 and 2012. Aku also played for Victory in 2012. Both players return to Victory after 11 years. In a situation, where Victory is in the second tier of Maldives football hierarchy.
Umair stated that he is in the later stages of his career, and to sign for Victory SC means that he wants to help the team who stood by him, to shape his successful footballing life.
“Victory helped me in my early days, of course, I want to help them reach the targets of current management, which is to reach the first division. I believe that Victory’ place in Maldives football can never be faded, and the club must be in the top division, with all those achievements the club had,” Umair said.
Akram - 2018 SAFF Suzuki Cup winning captain of the Maldives National Football Team is in rehabilitation process after his successful knee surgery back in last October. In a year, the SAFF Championship is scheduled for this June, Aku decided to step out from first division football and take the challenge of Victory SC as the club decided to keep faith on him.
“I believe current Victory SC management have a targets and wisdom to achieve them. I would like to repay the faith that they have put on me. It was about the trust and good relation with them, that I decided to join Victory” Akram stated.
Akram said that he will be not in the best physical shape in time to join National Team Camp for this year’s SAFF Competition. About his selection, Aku is willing to accept whatever the coaching team of National Team decide.
Victory have started their preparation for this year’s second division tournament with a perfect plan, they are making every effort count in process to reach the target, about reaching the first division next season.
The tentative schedule FAM have sent to member clubs indicates that, Second Division Football Tournament is scheduled for October this year.
